I am very excited to be writing my first message as your newest President of the San Diego Golf Course Superintendents Association. Coming off the heels of a tumultuous and unprecedented year filled with uncertainty, there are many positive indicators that we will once again be returning to in-person events and gatherings, the cornerstone of our association. Despite these challenges, we were able to provide some unique virtual events that ranged from fun and entertaining such as our Ballast Point Tasting, to educational webinars that offered CEU’s like the Summer Education event with Dr. Jim Kerns. The many town halls kept us informed of what was occurring at national, state, and local levels concerning task groups, reopening protocols and safety management efforts. Danny Bader’s “The Path of Resilience” illustrated many good ways to build resilience and persevere through difficult times. The Fall Education “Drive-In” styled event was a welcomed reprieve from the State’s stay at home order.
The focus this year is going to be twofold: returning to our core meetings and educational events and building our membership numbers. While we simply could not sustain our association without the professional and financial support of our wonderful sponsors, the fact remains that Superintendent Member involvement is low and we need to do everything we can to increase that number. Before I became involved in the association, I had no idea how much I was missing out on the networking relationships and friendships that I have made subsequently. Therefore, I ask you to please encourage at least one person that has not been to an association event to attend one this year. Here are the events that we already have lined up this year:
- May 12th – Spring Education at American Sod Farms in Escondido followed by golf at Maderas Golf Club.
- July 12th – 2021 Invitational Golf Tournament at The Journey at Pechanga
- September 24th – Don’t Stop Believin’ Golf Tournament at Del Mar Country Club
- November 15th – Ray Spardy Scholarship & Research Tournament
- December 3rd – Holiday Party at Island Palms Resort on Shelter Island
Hosting an association event is another great way to get involved while delivering revenue to your facility. We are presently searching for a host site for our Fall Education, which is typically held in October. Please reach out if you are interested in hosting an event and we will be more than excited to discuss the many possible opportunities.
Also noteworthy at this time is the Rounds 4 Research Program. Beginning April 26 – May 2, the Environmental Institute for Golf (EIFG) will be administering the Rounds 4 Research auction. The Rounds 4 Research program was designed to address a critical shortage in turfgrass research funding by auctioning donated rounds of golf online. Rounds 4 Research allows GCSAA chapters to participate as fundraising partners with the vast majority of proceeds (80%) going back to those organizations. The goal this year is to return $3,000 to the San Diego GCSA so we can direct that funding towards research that will have a local impact. We will be reaching out to golf courses soliciting donated rounds but you are able to donate online at www.gcsaa.org and locate the Rounds 4 Research link. It takes less than two minutes to complete the online form but please make sure to select the San Diego GCSA as the beneficiary GCSAA Chapter.
I look forward to seeing you at the next event.
