Teddy RosztockyBy Teddy Rosztoczy, AA Equipment

Well and eventful January 2010 in San Diego which included the Farmers Insurance Open, Member Appreciation Day, and plenty of rain and wind, has come and gone. First and foremost, thanks to John Martinez and his crew at The Journey at Pechanga for hosting our membership appreciation event. The course was in great shape and provided plenty of breathtaking views. Thankfully the weather cooperated and the course dried up beautifully.

The weather, however, did not cooperate very well with Torrey Pines Golf Course leading up to the Farmers Insurance Open. Just when Candice Combs and her crew had the course in perfect shape, five days of rain and wind resulted in washed out bunkers, trees blown over, and debris strewn everywhere. Thanks to the help of volunteers such as Mark Warren, Brendon Reaksecker, Nate Radwick and his crew from The Bridges, who helped run trash pumps, shovel sand and rake debris, the course was back in shape in no time. In the end, the hard work and coordinated efforts of Candice Combs, Bill Sinclair, Pat Holden, Wayne Carpenter and Ken Roberts were able to provide the PGA with a top notch golf course. Watching the tournament on television, one would never know that a fierce storm had hit the week prior.

This March, Steve Auckland and La Costa Resort and Spa will be hosting a brand new LPGA tournament. Presented by J Golf, the LPGA Classic will be played March 22 – 28. La Costa Resort and Spa signed a five year agreement with J Golf and the LPGA to host the event through 2014. So if anyone’s curious to check out the ladies side of the professional golf tour, head to La Costa at the end of March. continue

Brendon Reaksecker

By Brendon Reaksecker, Bonita GC
What happened to January? I don’t know about for you, but it was a blur for me. I’d like to recap what the SDGCSA has been up to for those of you that missed out on the events over the past month and prepare you for what is coming up in the near future.

On January 13th the SDGCSA sponsored the WateReuse Associations monthly meeting held at Encinitas Ranch. 96 people attended this meeting. It was a great opportunity to rub elbows with water district representatives and visit with fellow Superintendents. Dr. Jim Baird from UC Riverside made the trip south to talk about the latest trends in turf breeding and highlight some of the research coming out of the UCTRAC program. A big thanks to Kent Graff for hosting, our members for attending and Jennifer Duffy, President of the WateReuse Association, for allowing us to sponsor their meeting. This meeting was put on at no cost to our membership.

Pechanga, Pechanga, Pechanga. John Martinez and crew had The Journey at Pechanga looking and playing awesome. It was great to have a true general meeting with the flag salute, introductions, committee reports and a guest speaker. Steve Randall from GCSAA spoke about the Top Ten topics within our National Association. The Modified Stableford format was a nice change of pace, but still made for a long day on the course. The SDGCSA covered $60.00 of the entry fee, created 3 flights, paid out 5 places in each flight and had the old archives out on display. I hope you had a chance to look through the history of our Association and enjoyed the old photos. Honorary Member, Jim Lipari, gave a brief history about when and how the SDGCSA was founded. continue
