Happy Holidays to everyone!

It’s just about that time of year again… you know, when Troy’s Patriots let him down in the playoffs? And yes, since I’m a Seahawks fan I realize I have no room to talk. But seriously, March is right around the corner and with it comes our Third Annual Assistant Superintendent Training Camp. Hard to believe we have two of them under our belts already!

This year’s installment finds us in Mr. Burgraffs backyard at Riverwalk GC on March 10 and 11. The speakers are still being tracked down, but to all you Affiliate members out there, please consider contributing to our Raffle/ Golf prizes as you have in the past. Anything would be great, but especially gift cards for gas, groceries, Home Depot etc would go a long way for these right-hand men and women.

Assistants are largely overworked and underpaid and anything you and your companies could do would be much appreciated… especially considering that it’s just plain tough all over out there. Thank-you for your consideration. And to all you Supes out there, please email me at ghaynes@maderasgolf.com with your narrative nominations for the Asst Supt. of the Year Award. Once again we will be sifting through a pile of worthy nominees, reading why they should take home the illustrious prize. We will do this despite the fact that some Supts last year blatantly ignored the max word limit imposed by this Author, though we would never name any names…*cough* Barrier *cough*. continue

Happy New Years to everyone, hopefully everybody had a fun, safe Christmas and New Year’s weekend. Thanks to everyone who attended our Christmas and Holiday Gala at the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo. While times are tough, and the attendance was slightly down this year, it served as a great venue for people to bring their spouses, have a few drinks, a great dinner, and even a little dancing, thanks to none other than Joe Neri. Also, this past month, we had our annual Ray Spardy Memorial Golf Tournament benefiting scholarship and research, which once again proved to be one of the best events of the year. Many thanks go out to Phil Fitzgerald and his staff. Steele Canyon was in awesome shape, and the weather cooperated for once, nothing but sunny blue skies all day.

Coming up later this month, on Thursday, January 28th we will be hosting a Membership Appreciation meeting at The Journey at Pechanga. In an effort to give back to our membership, the association will be paying half the cost for each member, so the cost per member for this meeting will be only $75. This includes a continental breakfast in the morning, boxed lunches on the carts, heavy appetizers and prizes following the golf tournament. This will be a great event at a top notch golf facility for an unbeatable price. I know, I sound like a salesman, but you won’t want to miss it. Go to member appreciation events page to sign up immediately! continue

Brendon Reaksecker

By Brendon Reaksecker, Bonita GC

The San Diego Golf Course Superintendents Association would like to thank all participants of the Ray Spardy Memorial Golf Tournament held at Steele Canyon on December 10th for your generous contributions to the 2009/2010 Scholarship and Research Fund.

It was truly a unified effort to put on a golf tournament of this magnitude. The help of volunteers behind the scenes, financial supporters through sponsorships, golf participation, donated signage, on-course photography, silent auction items, great raffle prizes and the homemade baked goods, did not go unnoticed or unappreciated by the Association or the attendees.

This year 6 students received scholarships, Michael Magnani Jr. (Ray Spardy Memorial Award), Zackery Holm (Hector Clark Award), Eric Johnson, Cameron Kreeger, Patrick Coughlin, and Matt Partridge. Two of the award winners are sons of local Superintendents. We will continue to donate funds to research, host educational meetings and support the educational endeavors of local students. This in turn will be a direct benefit to our industry and the members of the SDGCSA. continue
