October has come to a close and with it the completion of most fall projects. Courses have completed their overseeding along with fall aerification, now all we need is rain! I mentioned it last month, but thanks again to everyone who participated our Golf With a Hero Tournament. It’s one of the best events that we as an association do and all the military participants were very appreciative. This past month there was also some movement around the county. Our very own Vice President, Vince Zellefrow, formerly the superintendent at The Golf Club of California, has taken the superintendent’s position at Marbella Country Club, owned and managed by American Golf. Congrats to Vince on the new job and good luck!
November’s here, which means shorter days, cooler weather, and the holiday season is just around the corner. Our clocks turned back over the Halloween weekend, which was good and bad. It’s nice to have a little extra sunlight in the morning, however it’s brutal driving home from work when it’s pitch black outside. Looking forward, the association has two of its biggest events of the year coming up in the next couple months. continue
October 1, 2009 is the start of the Open Enrollment for the Southern California Golf Association (SCGA). If you are interested in establishing a handicap for golf tournaments now is the time to apply and get an extra few months of eligibility. The 2010 Annual Membership Program runs for the 2010 calendar year. The annual cost is $40.00. In order to apply I would need to have six scores from any recently played rounds. Contact me for detailed information and getting started. Anyone in the Association is welcome to apply.
For those of you that are already a member of our Affiliate Club the 2010 Annual Membership Renewal Program begins October 1 and runs through November 30, 2009. You will need to pay your yearly dues of $40.00 during that period. Failure to do so will cost you an extra $10.00 and could leave you without a valid index at the beginning of 2010.
There is an important issue I would like to bring to your attention regarding the posting of scores after your round of golf. When checking the SCGA website to verify handicaps prior to our monthly meetings and golf tournaments I find that the vast majority of our members do not always post their scores. continue

On October 9th I left the beautiful San Diego Airport to start my journey to the GCSAA Headquarters in Lawrence, Kansas. It was raining and very cold upon arrival, but I loved it! My skin hasn’t felt rain in months.
The Chapter Delegates meeting was well organized, informative and opened my eyes to the mission of the GCSAA. They have faced serious cutbacks that have impacted the lives of long time employees. The staff at headquarters has been reduce from 124 to 85, the Golf Industry Show in San Diego is 1/3 as large in sales of trade show floor space at 200,000 sq. ft. verses 300,000 sq. ft. in Orlando. I walked away from this meeting knowing that the industry is still strong and the services provided by the GCSAA are greater than the membership realizes. Take the time to call staff members with questions and search the website for information. It is all there for our benefit. This just announced; the GIS for 2012 will be in Las Vegas, Nevada! continue
