I’m still sore from the 1st Annual Crew Cup soccer tournament and BBQ organized by WaterTech Ag. It’s not that I ate too much, but let’s face it, I’m out of shape. Two minutes into the game I could hear my heart beating in my ears. My brain was telling me I was still fast, but the legs did not cooperate. If you’ve ever jumped off of a skateboard while going downhill and your legs can’t keep up with your upper body, that’s what it felt like as I face planted and watched the ball roll out of bounds. It was still fun and great to be active with other crews from around the county. Congratulations Maderas for your hard fought victory and thank you Jeff and Richard for organizing the get together for all of the right reasons, appreciating our crews.
Houston we have a problem! SDGCSA email blasts coming out of Constant Contact to the membership are not being read or located. As an Association we have been doing more than ever, sending out emails and communications about what is happening but not all members are receiving the information. We had an intimate meeting at Maderas on the 16th of September and I appreciate the involvement of those in attendance. Of the 230 emails that go out only 29% of the membership open them, 7% get bounced, that means 64% of the membership is not informed. Check your JUNK or SPAM inboxes for the emails being sent out. If all else fails visit the website, www.sdgcsa.com to stay in the know. continue
It’s that time of the year again when aerification cores start flying, the grass doesn’t stop growing, the rain makes scheduling a nightmare and the temperatures start rising.
Aerification is the one cultural practice that superintendents love and equipment technicians hate. It’s the time of the year where we beat up the greens, the mowers and the staff and at about the time when everything heals we do it all over again.
Here are some helpful hints to prepare for aerification as well as to help the healing process during aerification. continue
Congratulations to team Maderas for winning the crew appreciation soccer tournament.

For those of us who enjoy the heat in San Diego, August did not disappoint. Throughout the county a few records were broken, with temperatures breaking one hundred degrees inland and not a whole lot cooler along the coast. Alas, summer will be coming to an end soon, temperatures will cool down, and another Chargers season is right around the corner.
Thanks to everyone who attended our annual Just for Fun golf tournament at Vista Valley Country Club earlier this month. Special thanks go out to Ron Nolf and his crew! The course was in great shape and included a few new upgrades since the last time we held an event at Vista Valley. New tee boxes added distance along with amazing views, and made for a fun, challenging golf tournament. Congratulations go out to the team of Paul Zaremba, Ed Espinoza, Dan Yury, and Brian Schnese for taking home first place low gross with a score 59! Congrats also go out to the first place low net team of Ken Newcomb, Gary Vasquez, Shane Roth and Tim McGuire. Since it was a scramble golf tournament, there was also a team skins game which nobody won, and will carry over to our next Golf with a Hero tournament on October 5 at the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo. continue

The last two weeks have been quite a ride! It was great to see and get to know members of the Association better at the Del Mar Race Track on Aug. 26th. “Beat the Heat” was a good name for that event. I am sure looking forward to the cool weather in the fall.
On Aug. 28th we had the first ever Past Presidents 9-hole golf classic. Scott Hardy took home the bragging rights by shooting a blistering 41. His wife Kathy must have been his lucky charm. We had 9 past presidents attend, including Dave Fleming, Dave Jones, Dennis Orsborn, “smooth swinging Bill Baker”, Ron Nolf, David Major, Bob Dobek, Scott Hardy and Sandy Clark. I hope to see this event grow and become an annual get together.
I’d like to thank the membership for their involvement in spreading the word about the stressful situation with the Bailey Families daughter. She is home safely. It makes me proud to know that we all have each others’ backs during times of crisis.
